Cosmetology student practicing styling technique at Beyond 21st Century Beauty Academy, comparison with Golden West College program

Beyond vs. Golden West College Cosmetology Program

If you live in north or central Orange County — Cypress, Buena Park, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Westminster, or the surrounding cities — the cosmetology school decision often comes down to Golden West College in Huntington Beach or a private school like Beyond. Both teach 1,000 hours. Both run during the day. The differences are in pass rate, calendar, and start-date flexibility. Here's how they actually compare.

The short answer

Beyond posted a higher 2025 California State Board cosmetology pass rate than Golden West — 80% versus 73% — and finishes the same 1,000-hour curriculum in roughly 8 months versus Golden West's two-semester (~1 year) timeline. Golden West's tuition is significantly lower at sticker price, and they have one of the highest-volume cosmetology programs in Orange County, which makes their pass-rate number well-tested.

2025 California State Board cosmetology pass rate

  • Beyond 21st Century Beauty Academy: 80%
  • Golden West College: 73%

Source: California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology quarterly school pass-rate reports.

One thing worth flagging about that 73%: it's calculated on 128 written-exam candidates from Golden West in calendar 2025. That's a high-volume program — among the busiest community college cosmetology pipelines in Orange County — so the 73% isn't a small-sample fluke. It's a well-tested number across more than four quarters of BBC data. We mention this because pass rates from a single quarter or a small sample can be misleading — Golden West's 73% is neither.

Hours and time-to-license

Both programs teach 1,000 hours — the California state minimum since SB 803 took effect in 2022. The calendar around those hours is what differs.

  • Beyond: 1,000 hours, completed in a little over 8 months full-time on a daytime track
  • Golden West College: 1,000 hours over approximately two semesters (~1 year), day only, Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Cohorts are tied to the community college academic calendar.

Same total hours, same daytime-only delivery, roughly 4 months apart on time-to-license. The Golden West timeline isn't unreasonable — it's roughly half the time of a 1,600-hour CC program — but if you want to be licensed and earning sooner, Beyond's daytime track gets you there in 8 months.

Cost

Beyond cosmetology: $17,560 total — tuition, registration, kit, books, and state STRF fee. We publish the full number on our cosmetology program page.

Golden West College cosmetology: California resident tuition is $46 per unit. Total tuition for the program runs roughly $1,400 to $2,500. Golden West publishes kit and textbook costs in the $1,600 to $1,800 range, plus a uniform around $100 to $150. Total out-of-pocket: typically $3,000 to $4,500.

That's a sticker gap of roughly $13,000 to $14,000. Both schools participate in federal financial aid — Pell Grants (up to $7,395 for the 2025–26 award year) and federal student loans can be applied at either. Beyond's FAFSA school code is 041482. More on financial aid at Beyond.

Schedule and start dates

Golden West's cosmetology program runs day only, Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, on the community college academic calendar. You start when their next cohort opens — typically tied to fall and spring semesters — not when you're ready.

Beyond's cosmetology program also runs daytime only — Tuesday through Saturday 8:30 AM to 3 PM for full time or Tuesday through Saturday 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM for part time — but with monthly start dates. If you want to begin in the next 30 to 60 days, that's typically possible at Beyond.

Both programs are day-only for cosmetology. Neither offers an evening cosmetology track. If you need evening cosmetology classes specifically, neither of these will fit and you'd be looking at LATTC's 2-year evening program instead.

One prereq worth knowing about: Golden West's cosmetology catalog explicitly states students "may be dropped from the program" if their English proficiency isn't adequate. The cosmetology course sequence is also strictly sequential — you can't jump ahead. And you start with the full Golden West College admission application, not the cosmetology program directly. Beyond admits students with a high school diploma or GED, and application goes directly to the cosmetology program — no college-wide placement gate.

Esthetician comparison

If you're considering esthetician (skin care) instead of cosmetology, both schools run a 600-hour program. Golden West's esthetician program is one semester, day only. Beyond's esthetician program is 600 hours, available in day or night tracks — Beyond is one of the few schools in the LA + OC area with an evening esthetician option for working adults. Our esthetician curriculum is built on Dermalogica products and protocols, which means graduates leave trained on the system most local skincare-focused salons and spas actually use.

What about nail tech?

Golden West doesn't run a manicurist program. Across Beyond's full comparison set of Orange County and southeast LA community colleges, the BBC reports show essentially no community college manicurist exam candidates in recent years. If nail tech is what you want, Beyond's manicurist program is the realistic option in this region. It runs nights only — Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM and Saturday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM — about 5 months total. We're an official Aprés Nail certified school, so our curriculum is built on the Gel-X system most working nail salons in LA and OC actually use.

Location and commute

Golden West College is in Huntington Beach. Beyond is at 13640 Imperial Highway in Santa Fe Springs — about 22 miles north, easy off the 605 or the 22. For students based in coastal OC (Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Westminster, Costa Mesa), Golden West is the shorter commute. For students based in north OC and the LA/OC border corridor (Cypress, Buena Park, La Habra, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Fullerton), Beyond is often comparable or shorter, depending on traffic on the 22.

Who this fits

Golden West College may be the better fit if:

  • You live in coastal Orange County and the commute matters
  • Sticker tuition is your single biggest constraint and you can give the program about a year on a community college calendar
  • You want to combine cosmetology credits with general education toward an AA degree
  • You can wait for a fall or spring cohort start

Beyond may be the better fit if:

  • You want to be licensed and earning in roughly 8 months instead of a year
  • You need predictable start dates rather than waiting on a community college semester
  • You're also considering nail tech — Golden West doesn't run one, Beyond does
  • You want evening esthetician classes — Golden West's esthetician is day-only
