If you live in the San Gabriel Valley or northern LA County, the private cosmetology school decision often comes down to two options: Paul Mitchell The School Pasadena or a school like Beyond. Both are private NACCAS-accredited beauty schools, both teach the 1,000-hour California cosmetology curriculum, both run multiple programs. The decision usually comes down to pass rate, tuition, and program lineup. Here's the honest comparison.
The short answer
Beyond posted a significantly higher 2025 California State Board cosmetology pass rate than Paul Mitchell Pasadena — 80% versus 53%.
Beyond's tuition is also roughly $3,000 lower for the standard 1,000-hour cosmetology program. The Paul Mitchell brand has national recognition. Beyond has a stronger state board track record and lower cost.
2025 California State Board cosmetology pass rate
- Beyond 21st Century Beauty Academy: 80% (25 candidates)
- Paul Mitchell The School Pasadena: 53% (93 candidates)
Source: California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology quarterly school pass-rate reports.
That 27-point gap on a same-length, same-state, same-license program is significant. Pass rate isn't everything, but it's an objective signal of whether a school's students actually leave with a usable license.
Hours and time-to-license
Both schools meet the California cosmetology hour requirements, but they're not identical.
- Beyond: 1,000 hours — the California state minimum since SB 803 — completed in about 8 months full-time on a daytime track
- Paul Mitchell Pasadena: Two options. A 1,000-hour program (similar to Beyond's) or an optional 1,200-hour extended program that goes beyond the state minimum. Both are roughly 8 to 10 months full-time depending on the option chosen.
On hours and timeline, the two schools are similar. The decision isn't about speed — it's about pass rate and cost.
Cost
Beyond cosmetology: $17,560 total — tuition, registration, kit, books, and state STRF fee, all in. Cosmetology program page.
Paul Mitchell Pasadena cosmetology:
- 1,000-hour program: $20,573.87 total (tuition $15,150 + kit, books, iPad, fees)
- 1,200-hour program: $23,792.44 total (tuition $18,180 + kit, books, iPad, fees)
Beyond's standard cosmetology program runs about $3,000 less than Paul Mitchell Pasadena's 1,000-hour option, and about $6,000 less than their 1,200-hour option. Both schools participate in federal financial aid — Pell Grants (up to $7,395 for 2026–27) and federal student loans can be applied at either. More on financial aid at Beyond.
Program lineup
Both schools run multiple programs, but the lineups aren't identical.
Paul Mitchell Pasadena: Cosmetology (1,000 or 1,200 hour), Hairstylist (600 hour), Barbering (1,000 hour), Skin Care (600 hour), Nail Care (400 hour).
Beyond: Cosmetology (1,000 hour, daytime), Esthetician (600 hour, day or night), Manicuring / Nail Tech (400 hour, night only — Aprés-certified).
One note on the nail program comparison: Paul Mitchell Pasadena does offer a 400-hour Nail Care program — $7,448.60 all-in under their May 2026 pricing, with a limited number of start dates per year. What it doesn't have yet is a State Board track record: BBC quarterly reports show no Paul Mitchell Pasadena manicurist exam candidates in 2024 or 2025. Beyond's 400-hour manicuring program is $5,595 all-in — about $1,850 less — posted a 79% manicurist pass rate in 2025 (53 candidates), and we're an official Aprés Nail certified school. If nail tech is on your list, Beyond is the established option of the two.
Esthetician comparison
Both schools run real esthetician programs. Beyond's esthetician program also offers both day and night tracks — we're one of the few schools in the LA + OC area with an evening esthetician option for working adults. Our esthetician curriculum is built on Dermalogica products and protocols.
Schedule and start dates
Paul Mitchell Pasadena runs scheduled cohort start dates throughout the year, similar to most private schools. Beyond starts new cohorts almost every month on a daytime cosmetology schedule — Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 AM to 3 PM full-time, with a part-time morning track.
Location and commute
Paul Mitchell Pasadena is at 825 East Green Street in Pasadena. Beyond is at 13640 Imperial Highway in Santa Fe Springs — about 20 miles south, on the LA/OC border.
