Cosmetology vs Esthetician vs Nail Tech: Which Program?

Cosmetology vs esthetician vs nail tech is the first real decision you make before beauty school, and it shapes your tuition, your schedule, and the kind of work you'll do for years. The honest truth: none of these is the best program. They're different paths with different costs, license scopes, and lifestyles. This guide puts all three side by side using Beyond's real numbers, then gives you clear "choose this if" recommendations so you can match the program to your goals and your budget.

We've been training licensed professionals in Santa Fe Springs since 1997, and the students who finish happiest are the ones who picked the right path going in, not the broadest or the cheapest by default.

Cosmetology vs esthetician vs nail tech: the side-by-side

Here's the core comparison at a glance.

Hours and time to license

  • Cosmetology: 1,000 hours, about eight months full-time.
  • Esthetician: 600 hours, about five months on a day schedule or 7.5 months part time.
  • Nail technology: 400 hours, about five months.

After hours are complete, you still sit for the California State Board exam to earn your license, so build a little time for exam prep into your plan.

Tuition

  • Cosmetology: $17,560.
  • Esthetician: $11,206.50.
  • Nail technology: $5,595.

Schedule

  • Cosmetology: daytime only.
  • Esthetician: day or night, the only program we offer with both.
  • Nail technology: evenings only.

Schedule alone rules a lot of decisions. If you work days, cosmetology won't fit and the nail or evening esthetics track will. If you're free during the day, all three are open to you.

License scope

  • Cosmetology: the broadest license, covering hair, skin, and nails.
  • Esthetician: skincare and facial treatments.
  • Nail technology: manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements.

Financial aid

This is a real differentiator. The cosmetology and esthetician programs are FAFSA-eligible, so federal aid may help if you qualify. The nail technology program is shorter than the federal hour threshold for Title IV, so it is not FAFSA or Pell eligible. For nails, we offer payment plans instead. You can review options on our financial aid page.

Career paths and what the work looks like

Scope shapes your career, so think about the actual day-to-day, not just the license.

Cosmetology opens the widest set of doors because the license covers hair, skin, and nails. Cosmetologists work as hairstylists and colorists, in full-service salons, and many specialize over time. If you're not sure exactly which niche you want yet, the breadth is the point.

Esthetics is for people drawn to skin. Estheticians do facials, skincare treatments, waxing, and work in spas, dermatology and medical-spa settings, and skincare retail. As a Dermalogica partner school, Beyond trains estheticians on professional-grade skincare. If skin is your passion, going deep beats going broad.

Nail technology is the fastest and most affordable way into the industry. Nail techs work in nail salons and full-service salons, and many build a strong independent client base. With systems like Gel-X, acrylic, and dip powder in demand, skilled techs stay booked. Beyond is Aprés Gel-X certified and trains on all the major systems.

So which costs less, and is cheaper better?

On sticker price, nails are the lowest at $5,595, esthetics is in the middle at $11,206.50, and cosmetology is the highest at $17,560. But cheaper isn't automatically smarter. You're paying for scope and time. Cosmetology costs more because it's longer and licenses you for more services. If you only want to do nails, paying for cosmetology you won't use is the expensive choice, not the cheap one. Match the spend to the work you actually want.

Choose the program that fits you

  • Choose cosmetology if you want the broadest license, you're open to hair, skin, and nails, you can attend during the day, and you want maximum flexibility in where your career goes.
  • Choose esthetics if skincare is your focus, you want a spa or medical-spa path, or you need a program that offers an evening schedule because you work days.
  • Choose nail technology if you want the fastest, most affordable entry, you're set on nails, and an evening schedule works for you. Just plan for payment plans rather than federal aid.

Common questions

Which beauty program makes the most money?

It depends far more on your skill, specialty, clientele, and location than on the license itself. A booked, specialized nail tech or esthetician can do very well, and a broad cosmetology license gives you more services to offer. We don't quote income figures, because real earnings vary widely.

Can I do nails with a cosmetology license?

Yes. A California cosmetology license covers hair, skin, and nails, so it includes nail services. If nails are all you want to do, though, the dedicated nail program is faster and far less expensive.

Is esthetician school worth it compared to cosmetology?

If skincare is your goal, esthetics gets you there in fewer hours and at lower cost than cosmetology, with an evening option for people who work days. Cosmetology is worth the extra time and tuition when you want the broader hair-skin-nails scope.

Which program can I do at night?

Esthetics offers a day or night schedule, and nail technology runs evenings only. Cosmetology is daytime only. Your availability is often the deciding factor.

Do all three require the California State Board exam?

Yes. Each program leads to its own California license, and each requires passing the corresponding State Board exam after you complete your hours.
