If your California beauty license is coming up for renewal — or you just got licensed and want to know what to expect down the road — this is the clear version. No fluff, no scare tactics about lapsed licenses. Just what you owe, when it's due, and what continuing education actually does in a state that doesn't require it.
The short answer
California beauty licenses renew every two years. Renewal currently costs $50 for cosmetologists, barbers, and most other license types. California does not require continuing education for renewal — but most professionals who stay sharp take it anyway. We'll explain why below.
Renewal cycle
Every California license issued by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) — cosmetologist, barber, esthetician, manicurist, hairstylist, electrologist — runs on a two-year cycle. The exact expiration date is printed on your license. The BBC bases the cycle on the date you were first issued, not the calendar year, so two people who got licensed in different months will have different renewal months.
Check your expiration date through DCA License Search or by logging into BreEZe. Don't rely on memory.
What renewal costs
Current renewal fees:
- Cosmetologist renewal: $50
- Barber renewal: $50
- Esthetician renewal: $50
- Manicurist renewal: $50
If you let your license expire, the BBC charges a delinquency fee of $25 on top of the renewal. You can renew a delinquent license for up to five years after expiration. The Board cancels licenses that are not renewed for five years — and to become licensed again after that, you must apply for and pass the examination.
How to renew (the fast way)
Online renewal through BreEZe is fastest — most renewals process in a few days. Mail renewals take weeks. Three steps:
- Log into BreEZe with your existing credentials
- Click renewal, confirm your address, and pay the fee by card
- Print the confirmation; your new license arrives by mail within a couple of weeks
The truth about continuing education in California
California is one of the states that does not require continuing education for beauty license renewal. You can renew every two years for the next 40 years without taking a single class. Legally, you're fine.
That's the legal answer. The practical answer is different.
Beauty is a service industry where techniques, products, and safety standards change constantly. The 2026 PSI/BBC content outline raised infection-control weighting from 12% to 30% — because the safety landscape evolved. Lash lifts, brow lamination, dermaplaning, Gel-X, Russian manicures — have only recently become popular. The pros earning the most in LA County are the ones who keep learning long after their initial license.
Voluntary continuing education isn't about checking a box for the state. It's about:
- Adding billable services to your menu
- Staying current on infection-control standards and chemical safety
- Justifying a price increase to existing clients
- Qualifying for product-line partnerships (Dermalogica, Aprés, and many color lines offer their own certificate training)
What CE counts and where to find it
Since California doesn't track CE hours formally, you have flexibility. Most professionals pull from a mix of:
- Brand-led classes (Dermalogica, Wella, Brazilian Blowout)
- Distributor education (CosmoProf, SalonCentric)
- Trade shows (ISSE Long Beach, Premiere Anaheim)
- Online platforms
What happens if your license lapses
Practicing on an expired license is illegal in California. The BBC can fine you, the salon owner who employs you, and require back-fee payment plus delinquency penalties. If you've been on maternity leave, dealing with health issues, or just lost track of the date — renew the moment you remember. Delinquent renewals are still cheaper than starting over.
Who this applies to
- Currently licensed California cosmetologists, barbers, estheticians, manicurists, hairstylists, and electrologists
- Newly licensed pros who want to plan for renewal two years from now
- Anyone returning from a break who's not sure if their license is still active
