Free California State Board Practice Exams for Cosmetology, Esthetician, and Manicurist Students

Studying for the California State Board exam is one of the most stressful stretches of beauty school. You've put in the hours, you know the material, but there's no good way to know whether you actually know it well enough to pass until you sit down at the PSI testing center. The single best way to find out earlier is to take a practice exam.

So we built three.

Today we're launching free, no-signup California State Board practice exams for all three license types we train at Beyond 21st Century Beauty Academy: cosmetology, esthetician, and manicurist. They're aligned to the official PSI content outline that took effect April 1, 2026 — the most significant update to the California beauty exams in years.

No email signup. No paywall. No “free for 7 days, then we charge your card.” Just open beyondcosmo.com/tools on your phone and start studying.

What’s in each practice exam

Each tool is built around the same official PSI/BBC content outline that the real exam uses.

  • The cosmetology bank has 125+ questions across 10 topic areas.
  • The esthetician bank has 75+ questions across the six 2026 content areas.
  • The manicurist bank has 60+ questions across the four 2026 categories — including the brand-new Skin Caresection that was added in April.

Three modes:

Full Exam A timed, full-length practice test.

  • Cosmetology: 100 questions in 120 minutes
  • Esthetics: 75 questions in 90 minutes
  • Manicurist: 60 questions in 90 minutes

Same time pressure as the real thing.

Quick Drill 15–25 questions, no timer. Built for daily review on the bus, during a break, or before bed. Ten minutes a day for two weeks before your exam date is genuinely more effective than one all-day cram session.

Topic Focus Pick one section — Safety and Infection Control, Haircoloring, Nail Care, whatever you're weakest in — and drill that until you've got it.

The new April 2026 outline weights Safety and Infection Control heavily across all three exams (30% for cosmetology, 40% for esthetics, 50% for manicuring), so most students benefit from spending extra time there.

After you finish, you get a topic-by-topic breakdown showing exactly which areas pulled your score down, so you know what to study next.

Why we built them

Two reasons.

The first is selfish. Our students want this. The April 2026 PSI update meaningfully changed the content weights for all three license types, and many existing study guides will probably take time to update. Several third-party “California beauty practice exam” apps still reference the old 2020 outline. We wanted our students to have a tool built specifically against the current outline that can be refreshed quickly.

The second is generous. We figured if we were going to build it for our students, we might as well make it free for everybody. Beauty school is an investment already. If you're studying at another California school, feel free to use our tool.

We’re a beauty school in Santa Fe Springs, not a test prep company. The goal is licensed beauty professionals walking into the industry well-prepared.

How to use them well

A few things we’ve learned from years of preparing students for the State Board:

  • Take a Full Exam first. You need to know where you stand. Most students score lower than they expect on their first attempt — and that’s fine. That score is the floor, not the ceiling.
  • Use the topic breakdown to guide your studying. If your Safety and Infection Control score is 60%, drill that topic exclusively for the next few days. Make the most of your study time by focusing on your biggest areas for improvment.
  • Quick Drill every day. 10–15 questions a day for the two weeks leading up to your exam. Students who study this way consistently outperform those who do one big study session per week.
  • Don’t memorize answers — understand why. The questions shuffle every session, and the real PSI exam questions are different anyway. Each question in our tool includes an explanation that walks through the reasoning using AI to tailor it to how the question was asked.
