If you’re exploring a career in skincare or considering enrolling in a California beauty school, you’ve likely come across the terms esthetician and aesthetician. While they sound identical and are often used interchangeably, there are sometimes subtle differences between how people use each word.
Let’s break it down so you know exactly what sets them apart.
Estheticians are licensed professionals who specialize in cosmetic skin treatments. Their focus is on improving the appearance of the skin using non-invasive techniques. In California, estheticians complete at least 600 hours of training through a state-approved beauty school and must pass the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology's esthetician State Board exam.
Generally speaking esthetician (spelled starting with an "e") is the most commonly used variation of the word.
Where They Work:
Spas, salons, skincare studios, resorts, their own studio, etc.
Ideal For:
Those who enjoy hands-on skincare treatments, a calming spa atmosphere, and helping clients care for and feel confident in their skin.
The truth is that both spellings mean the same thing.
However, informally, the term aesthetician (with an “a”) is sometimes used to describe skincare professionals who work in medical settings and perform more clinical or advanced procedures.
Important Note: In California, the official license is for estheticians. The term “aesthetician” is not a separate license but may be used by some to refer to estheticians who have additional certifications or work in medical environments. The term "Medical Aesthetican" is often used to emphasize this further. However, there is no such formal license in California.
There is a marketing aspect to the "a" spelling as well. The aesthetician spelling is sometimes used by brands or clinics to sound more sophisticated or align with international terminology. For example, luxury spas or dermatology clinics may choose the word aesthetician to differentiate from mainstream estheticians.
*note that these services are out of scope for California estheticians
Where They Tend To Use This Spelling :
Medical spas, dermatology clinics, plastic surgery offices, and wellness centers.
The terms esthetician and aesthetician are synonymous in California. However, some people tend to add an informal "medical" vibe when using aesthetician.
