How to Schedule Your California State Board Exam With PSI

You finished your hours. Then an email from PSI showed up saying you're eligible to schedule your written exam, and now you have questions: Do I schedule it from that email or come back to the school? Why won't the login work? Where do I even take it? We get texts about this from our own graduates every week, so here's how to schedule your California state board exam with PSI, from the day you finish your last hour to the day you walk out licensed.

The short answer

You schedule it yourself, online, at psiexams.com, or by phone at (877) 392-6422. Beyond 21st Century Beauty Academy doesn't book it for you, but we help you through it. The PSI notice comes only after the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology approves your exam application, which comes only after you submit that application with your proof of training. If you're stuck at the login, the most common reasons are that you're using a different email than the Board has on file, or the password-reset email is sitting in spam. Details below.

The full sequence

  1. Finish your hours. 1,000 for cosmetology, 600 for esthetics, 400 for manicuring. Beyond issues your Proof of Training (POT) once you've completed your hours and graduation requirements. You can't apply without it.
  2. Submit your exam application to the Board. You can file online through the Board's BreEZe system or mail the paper application to Sacramento (online applications are highly preferred). Include the application fee and your POT. Get this in as soon as you have your POT; the Board's processing time is the longest wait in the whole process, it can take several weeks.
  3. Wait for approval. When the Board approves your application, your information is sent to PSI, and PSI notifies you that you're eligible to schedule. That's the email people text us about.
  4. Create your PSI account and schedule. Go to psiexams.com, find the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology program, and create an account. Then pick a date, time, and test center. You can also schedule by phone at (877) 392-6422, Monday–Friday 4:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Pacific.
  5. Show up, pass, get licensed. The exam is written only. There is no practical exam in California anymore; your hands-on skills were evaluated at school. Pass, and your license is issued.

If you can't log in

This is the number one text we get. Try these in order:

  • Use the email address the Board has for you. PSI creates your candidate record from what the Board sent. If you applied with your old email, that's the one PSI knows. Check which address the PSI eligibility email went to and use that.
  • Check spam for the password-reset email. PSI's reset emails land in spam and promotions folders constantly. Give it 10 to 15 minutes and search your whole mailbox for "PSI."
  • Don't create a second account. A new account with a different email won't be linked to your eligibility, and then nothing works. If the reset never arrives, call PSI at the number above and they'll fix the record.
  • Your BreEZe login is not your PSI login. They're two different systems. Applying through BreEZe doesn't create a PSI account.

If you're still stuck after that, text us. We can't log in as you, but we can confirm the name your POT went out under.

Where you can take it

PSI has a test center listed for El Monte–Santa Fe Springs, which is the closest for many of our graduates, plus centers in Carson, Diamond Bar, Lawndale, Agoura Hills, and Irvine. Availability varies, so if the nearest one is booked out three weeks, check the others; a 30-minute drive beats a three-week wait. You'll see the current list of locations when you schedule.

What the exam looks like

  • Cosmetology: 100 scored questions plus 10 unscored pretest questions, 120 minutes.
  • Esthetician: 75 scored plus 10 pretest, 90 minutes.
  • Manicurist: 60 scored plus 5 pretest, 90 minutes.

Want to see where you stand before you book? Take a timed cosmetology, esthetician, or manicurist practice exam.

The exam is offered in English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, and Simplified Chinese. If you need an interpreter for another language, you request one from the Board on the paper exam application (not through BreEZe), well before test day. Our guides to passing the cosmetology exam, the esthetician exam, and the manicurist exam cover what's on it, and our free practice exams are the closest thing to the real format.

Test day

  • Bring an unexpired government photo ID. Driver's license or state ID from any state, passport, passport card, military ID, permanent resident card, or employment authorization card. The name must match your application exactly; a mismatch means you don't test.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes early. That's PSI's rule. Late arrivals can be turned away, lose the exam fee, and have to reapply through the Board with a new fee.
  • Need to reschedule? Cancel or reschedule at least 2 days before your appointment and you keep your fee. Inside that window, you forfeit it.
  • Results are immediate. You'll know before you leave. If you don't pass, you get a score breakdown by subject so you know what to study, and you can reapply to retest.

Who this fits

  • You're a Beyond graduate (or any California graduate) holding the PSI eligibility email and unsure what to do with it.
  • You're finishing your hours and want to know how long the whole thing takes. Realistically: apply the day you get your POT. The Board says to allow up to 8 weeks just for it to process your application, and you still need an open test date after that.
  • You're licensed in another state but didn't qualify for California's license-without-exam (reciprocity) route, so you're dealing with PSI for the first time.
